Leflore County, Mississippi

Leflore County, Mississippi was formed in 1871. The county was named after the chief of the Choctaw Indians, Greenwood Leflore. Today, the community boasts a large agricultural economy, museums and festivals, and southern warmth and hospitality.

Two products produced in the area are catfish and cotton. Eighty percent of all farm-raised catfish in the United States comes from the Mississippi Delta, a wide section of flat land near the mouth of the Mississippi River. Leflore County is part of that fertile area. Over 100,000 acres of Delta land is devoted to catfish farms. Cotton, a historically significant crop, still plays a vital role in the southern economy. Cotton fields blanket the flat Delta land lining the interstates and highways of the area.

The Mississippi Delta, also known as the "Birthplace of the Blues", has been home to several key players in the blues development. Leflore County native Robert Johnson is probably the most famous. Legend has it that Johnson sold his soul to the devil in order gain his musical talent. Another blues legend is John Hurt. Hurt's isolation from the modern blues world allowed his music to remain true to the pure Delta Blues sound.

Leflore County is home to several unique museums and festivals. Museums include: the Florewood River Plantation - a re-creation of an 1850's farm, Contonlandia - a collection of agricultural tools and objects found on the sunken Star of the West, and the Confederate Memorial Building - one of only two confederate memorial buildings in the United States. Local community festivals include: the Greenwood BalloonFest, Sky Parade, the Cotton Capital Blues Festival and a yearly Civil War re-enactment. Everyone is invited to come a join the family fun and southern hospitality of Leflore County.
